A branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, the Aguilar Library was founded in 1886 and was named for Sephardic Jewish author Grace Aguilar. Today it stands in East Harlem as a strong limestone and granite building, flanked by enormous Doric Columns. As part of the New York Horticultural Society's Green Branch program, the library's outdoor landscape is as majestic as its interior as the program seeks to bring color and life to the city's libraries. More than just a site of architectural wonder, Aguilar Branch does much for its community, providing services such as its Language Learning Center for adults, a computer lab for patrons whose first language is not English.
