    »Scott Weiland - Garrick

    July 11, 2014 8:00 PM

Scott Weiland is a prolific singer/songwriter and musician from northern California who rose to fame as the lead singer of the alternative rock band Stone Temple Pilots. After meeting bassist Robert DeLeo in 1986, Weiland formed the band Mighty Joe Young with the additions of guitarist Dean DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz. The band signed with Atlandic Records and changed its name to Stone Temple Pilots, or STP. STP's 1992 debut album Core, featured several hits such as "Sex Type Thing and "Wicked Garden," making the band one of the most influential acts of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The album, however, sparked comparisons to the music of Nirvana and Pearl Jam, which led to accusations that STP was cashing in on the popularity of the grunge scene. In the years following the spike in success, Weiland developed drug habits that prohibited the band from much of its 1996-1997 tour for its third album, Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop. Stone Temple Pilots went on a hiatus shortly after the failed album, and Weiland focused on developing his solo career. After spending time in jail during the end of the 1990s, he rejoined STP and the band released its 1999 album No. 4, before disbanding in 2003. The same year, Weiland was approached by bassist Duff McKagan to join a band with former Guns N' Roses band mates Slash and Matt Sorum as well as Dave Kushner. The five musicians soon formed Velvet Revolver and released Contraband in 2004 to critical and commercial acclaim. The album featured the song "Slither," which won Weiland a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal in 2005, marking the second time he received the award. Following a second album and a cancelled tour due to Weiland's erratic behavior, the tension between Weiland and the other Velvet Revolver members rose and forced the singer to leave the band. As a solo artist, Weiland released his first studio album in 1998and has since gone on to tour fairly regularly in support of his solo material as well as the songs he helped write with Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver.

    »Tyler The Creator

    July 14, 2014 9:00 PM

After reading his MySpace bio that begins "I'm 18, I like fat girls, and the piano is nice," it's difficult to figure out what kind of music Tyler, the Creator creates. The highly bloggable wunderkind, and leader of Long Beach-based buzz band Odd Future, creates underground hip-hop centered around raw beats and explicit topics, generally considered offensive. Despite the aggressive nature of his music, the rapper and producer still manages to portray a certain youthful charm, somehow making his taboo topics acceptable and widely appreciated by indie music aficionados. Tyler, the Creator's entertaining appearance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and remix of Swedish songstress Lykke Li's "I Follow Rivers" have only bolstered his fame.

    »Beyonce and Jay Z

    July 27, 2014 8:00 PM

Raised on the streets of Brooklyn and forced to provide for himself and his mother, Jay-Z, born Sean Corey Carter, turned to hustling while gaining a name for himself as a rapper. Befriending a small town rapper Jaz-O, Carter learned the basics of the rap industry, changed his moniker to Jay-Z and boldly started his own label Roc-A-Fella records. Met with immense success, both with his albums, and his label, Jay-Z established himself as a hip hop mogul known as a master of flow and for his clever wordplay, coupled with masterful timing. After dropping a successful album each year from 1996 to 2003, Jay-Z announced his retirement from rap and subsequently took over as president for the major label Def Jam Records. Again met with success, Jay-Z signed multiple popular artists, including Rihanna and Kanye West to the label, pulling it out of the financial slump it was suffering. In 2006 Jay-Z officially came out of retirement and continues to release albums and tour fairly extensively, all while running his hip-hop empire.
