    »Beyonce and Jay Z

    July 27, 2014 8:00 PM

Raised on the streets of Brooklyn and forced to provide for himself and his mother, Jay-Z, born Sean Corey Carter, turned to hustling while gaining a name for himself as a rapper. Befriending a small town rapper Jaz-O, Carter learned the basics of the rap industry, changed his moniker to Jay-Z and boldly started his own label Roc-A-Fella records. Met with immense success, both with his albums, and his label, Jay-Z established himself as a hip hop mogul known as a master of flow and for his clever wordplay, coupled with masterful timing. After dropping a successful album each year from 1996 to 2003, Jay-Z announced his retirement from rap and subsequently took over as president for the major label Def Jam Records. Again met with success, Jay-Z signed multiple popular artists, including Rihanna and Kanye West to the label, pulling it out of the financial slump it was suffering. In 2006 Jay-Z officially came out of retirement and continues to release albums and tour fairly extensively, all while running his hip-hop empire.

Modest Mouse is an American alternative rock band formed in Seattle suburb of Issaquah, Washington. The band's sound has managed to change with each consecutive album release and although the group first started as a timid indie rock group, it has morphed into a swarthy alternative rock troupe with confidence to boot.

    »Tiny Ruins

    July 29, 2014 8:00 PM

Based in New Zealand, Tiny Ruins is the folk project of singer/songwriter and musician Hollie Fullbrook. After writing fringe theater compositions, she channeled her creative energy through her own singer/songwriter point of view and landed on an intimate acoustic sound. Earning regional acclaim for her live performances throughout the late 2000s, she landed a record deal with Australian label Spunk Records in 2010 and has since continued to extend her reach into international audiences.

    »Keys N Krates

    July 31, 2014 10:00 PM

The live remix--which, in retrospect, is such a simple concept it's shocking no one came up with earlier--is Keys N Krates' bread and butter. The three piece band, comprised of a DJ, a keyboard player and a drummer, expertly interweaves vocal and instrumental samples with live instrumentation in a way that recreates what a traditional DJ would do, but with the added electricity of it being performed live. All in all, it's a unique and revelatory experience that's not to be missed.

    »The Meligrove Band

    August 01, 2014 9:30 PM

One of the leaders on the indie scene in Canada, The Meligrove Band formed in Ontario in 1997 and despite minor lineup changes, it is still touring and releasing albums today. Creating polished indie rock with catchy hooks and radio-friendly lyrics, The Meligrove Band might not be doing anything revolutionary, but whatever it's doing seems to have won over a sizable fan base, and as the group has been consistently playing similar music since its inception, it shows no sign of changing.

    »Bruno Mars

    August 02, 2014

Bruno Mars has become something of a sensation as of late and has achieved a popularity that may blindside those less familiar with the goings on of the world's most recent MTV generation. However, the combination of Bruno's suave looks, keen ear for pop tunes and tremendous on-stage talent has proven to be a recipe for success - major success, apparently.
