Before he became an infamous reality television star, Bret Michaels was best known as the lead vocalist of Poison. The glam metal outfit found success after its 1986 debut album, Look What the Cat Dragged In, and Michaels would go on to write several of his most recognizable songs with Poison, including the 1988 power ballad "Every Rose has Its Thorn." Though Poison gained fame as one of the biggest glam rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s, Michaels split off from the band and began to pursue a solo career. He released his debut solo album A Letter from Death Row, the soundtrack for a 1998 movie of the same name that Michaels both directed and stared in, and spent the rest of the decade releasing country rock material. His solo career is largely overshadowed by his participation in the reality dating show Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, which aired in 2007 and continued for three seasons, leading the generation that missed his stint as a rock star to view him as a temporary reality television personality. Michaels continues to record and release new music, including his 2012 album, Get Your Rock On.

Night Ranger is a rock and roll band that rose to recognition with a hard rock style during the 1980s. Hailing from San Francisco, the group earned a fair amount of attention for its debut album, Dawn Patrol, but truly broke through into national audiences with 1983's Midnight Madness, and a streak of radio hits such as "Sister Christian." After various lineup changes and a decline in mainstream appeal, Night Ranger fizzled into the background, only to reunite again with its original lineup in 1995. The group reintroduced itself with a sixth studio album, Feeding off the Mojo, and has since continued to perform and record new material.

Tesla is an American hard rock group that formed in Sacramento in 1984. Taking its name from the electrical engineer and inventor Nikola Tesla, the band scored three consecutive platinum albums full of blues rock and heavy metal in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Like most of its hard rock brethren at the time, Tesla suffered when the grunge onslaught took over in the early 1990s and soon after broke up in 1996. The band was able to continue around 2000, however, powered by a renewed touring appeal and a love for messing with its sound by playing cover songs or sometimes performing in an acoustic format.
