Glass Animals is an alternative rock band from Oxford, England that released its debut EP, Leafings, in 2012. Comprised of four guys who've all known each other since they were 14 years old, the group manages to create a unique sonic aesthetic that's the direct by product of strong musical interplay. The group released its debut LP, Zaba, in 2014 and the album's intelligent blend of atmospherics, propulsive rhythms and unique instrumental arrangements helped distinguish the band as a group that's willing to take chances with its sound in order to achieve its artistic endgame.

    »Yacht

    October 01, 2014 8:30 PM

When Jona Bechtolt was a youngster, music made more sense to him than academics. Instead of attending high school, Bechtolt opted to tour the U.S. with his older brother's punk band Allegro. After Bechtolt started working with electronics in the late '90s he was immersed in the infinite possibilities that electronic music could warrant. Producing music for a period of time by himself, Bechtolt decided he needed a female voice in many of his songs and he decided to include vocalist Claire L. Evans into his experimental electropop project called YACHT. This collaboration between Bechtolt and Evans created memorable tracks that combine intense, almost mathematical, electronic compositions with organic vocal melodies.

Whirr is a shoegaze band from the San Francisco Bay Area. Created in 2010, the group earned widespread national attention with its 2012 debut album,Pipe Dreams, before breaking into international audiences with the follow-up record, Sway, in 2014. Though the group is often compared to Slowdive or My Bloody Valentine, Whirr offers a punk rock spin on the romantic and distorted sound of the original wave of shoegaze in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

    »Pdx Jazz Presents: The Cookers

    October 01, 2014 9:30 PM

Having played with Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Dizzy Gillespie, the members of The Cookers might be the closest thing jazz has to a "dream team." Each a giant in his own right, musical legends Billy Harper (saxophone), Eddie Henderson (trumpet), George Cables (piano), Billy Hart (drums), David Weiss (trumpet), Donald Harrison (saxophone) and Cecil McBee (bass) are like a jazz festival in miniature, the very definition of an "all-star lineup." Taking its name from the seminal live Freddie Hubbard album, "The Night of the Cookers", the present day Cookers combine the energy and invention of the '60s with some of today's best playing to create a sound that's fresh, dynamic and totally intoxicating. Be there for their first-ever performance in Portland when PDX Jazz presents The Cookers at Jimmy Mak's.

    »Dreamgirls

    October 01, 2014 7:30 PM

Famous as both a Tony-winning Broadway musical and a star-studded film that won Jennifer Hudson an Academy Award, "Dreamgirls" is a soulful sensation and a chart-topping favorite for millions worldwide. Featuring '60s Motown hits and inspired by true stories of R&B stars like the Supremes, the Shirelles, James Brown and Jackie Wilson, "Dreamgirls" follows the tumultuous rise to fame of a female trio from Chicago whose joy and celebration come hand-in-hand with deceit and betrayal. The sparkle, sass and sorrow of the girls' journey is captured in unforgettable songs like "One Night Only," "Cadillac Car," "Steppin' to the Bad Side," "I Am Changing" and the gorgeous torch song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going."

    »Savoy

    October 01, 2014 9:00 PM

Boulder, Colorado is an interesting place. It's home to Colorado University at Boulder and the constant flux of students and young folk permeating the town causes some interesting cultural dynamics. The fact that the university is extremely expensive for out of state students helps bolster the town's standing as an ideal place for young people with money to spend their time. Juvenile adults who are given sufficient funds by their parents typically like to spend a lot of time partying. This is why an electronic producer like Savoy has become so popular in his native Boulder. Playing an extremely insightful style of dance-friendly electronic music has distinguished Savoy from the other rag-tag cast of electronic musicians in Colorado and if Savoy continues to inspire awe at his live shows, he'll no doubt go on to receive more and more popularity amongst those who like to party and get lost in electronic grooves.
