Arts & Museums
This art center offers shows, workshops and is available for special events.
Housed in "one of the few remaining examples of Victorian Second Empire architecture in Fort Smith," the Fort Smith Art Center has a permanent collection of contemporary regional art which is exhibited on a rotating basis. The Fort Smith Art Center showcases work in a variety of media by regional and nationally recognized artists each month.
Referring to themselves as the "keeper and teller" of the region's history, the Fort Smith Museum Of History has been acquiring, preserving and showcasing exhibits for over a hundred years now. Some prominent ones include a bronze Napoleon cannon, a 1908 American Fire Engine Company Steam Pumper, telephones from the 1880's and antique tools. On your way out, stop by at the cute gift shop and pick up some exquisite crafts and pottery. Check website for details on any upcoming events.
Filled with old railroad passenger cars, engines, old Fort Smith buses and other transportation artifacts, the Fort Smith Trolley Museum features a working, fully-restored 1926 electric streetcar that makes regular half-mile runs.
The Fort Smith Air Museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the development of aviation in western Arkansas and eastern Oklahoma. Its 56 display cases are primarily located across from the American Eagle and Northwest Airlink ticket counters. Special exhibits feature the 188th Air National Guard, Fort Smith Civil Air Patrol and the growth of corporate and general aviation in the Fort Smith area.
Fort Chaffee Barbershop will always be best remembered for the historic haircut it provided to Elvis Presley before he entered the army in 1958. The shop now is a museum, which has recreated the exact look of the original barbershop, displaying many objects and materials that were originally used here. Photos depicting Presley's stay at Chafee can also be found here. There are exhibits of artifacts and other photos showing the military history of Chafee in this museum. Fort Chaffee Barbershop Museum does well to display a slice of Chafee's history.
