»Capulin Volcano National Monument

Declared a U.S. National Monument by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, Capulin Volcano National Monument is home to an extinct volcano located in New Mexico. Capulin is considered to be a relatively young volcano and geologists believe that it last erupted between 58,000 and 62,000 years ago. Rising roughly 8,182 feet above sea level, Capulin Volcano's crater is 400 feet deep and surrounded by a rim that is about one mile in circumference. The volcano's summit offers spectacular views of snowy mountain peaks and parts of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado. Visitors can drive up to the rim and can also hike along trails that encircle the volcano.
