You will not find much more than an endless sky and huge field here, and thank goodness! This open space provides the perfect environment to let loose with seven acres of grassy knolls awaiting plans for development. This primitive park overlooks the towering trees of its Westside neighborhood. The lot is ideal for kite flying and you will find many taking advantage of just that. Dickinson Park is located just off Interstate Highway five, about 10 minutes south of downtown.

There is a lot to see including cows, old cars, a pond with ducks and a museum with old toys and machines, some of which date back to the 1800s. Pony rides and games for kids are offered from June through August. A 15-minute drive from Portland, it is an interesting look at one of the area's biggest industries of yesterday. There is no admission fee.

With just about everything you could want or need in a park, this 90-acre Portland gem aims to please. Located in the wooded, hilly Multnomah Village area, the park has a long list of amenities: hiking trails, nature area, baseball/softball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, picnic tables and facilities, a playground, rest rooms, and a community garden. Tailored to fit smaller bodies, this gym has placed all the climbing grips closer together so that kids don't have to stretch beyond their reach to climb the wall. The 3,000-square-foot facility focuses on the art of bouldering, although a dozen 20-foot top ropes are also a part of the gym. Introductory classes are required for the novice, but the instructions are well worth it. Equipment rentals are available.

Summerfield Golf & Country Club is located within a retirement community and was mentioned as one of the best Oregon executive courses. The nine-hole course, built in 1973, is open to the public for a nominal fee. The 33-par course features a chipping area and putting green, as well as an on-staff pro. The on site restaurant and lounge are great places to gather before or after the game.

With a water slide that's nearly 20 feet tall and 140 feet long, what more could you ask for? A recipe for fun, the chute is a new addition to the outdoor oasis. At Wilson Pool, height restrictions apply—you must be at least 48 inches tall. Operated by Portland Parks and Recreation, the outdoor public pool is definitely one of the city's best. Kids of all ages appreciate this attraction. Just a few minutes south of downtown, the pool is located near Capitol Highway and Terwilliger Boulevard.
