About an hour from the city's bright lights, you will find a free, self-guided tour of Palomar Observatory, one of the country's finest. With its 200-inch Hale telescope, this site has been credited with some of the most fascinating astronomical discoveries of last century. A small museum holds photos and videos of these discoveries. Picnic area, hiking trails and great panoramic views of the county are all worth the visit though the winding mountain roads may be a challenge. One particular oddity; there is an actual caboose on the course with a resort sign hanging from it.
