Known as the front man to alt-country band The Gourds, Kev Russell a.k.a. Shinyribs is his solo project, an outlet for a large reserve of solo material he's been working on. Shinyribs is also a more personal musical experience than his work The Gourds, offering a softer, more low-key version of his work with The Gourds.

    »Fidelio

    July 31, 2014 8:00 PM

This German-language opera in two acts was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven, and first produced in 1805 in Vienna. The piece takes place in Spain, as a young woman, Leonore, attempts to liberate her husband Florestan from captivity in a political prison. To do so she disguises herself as a male guard named Fidelio, sparking the events of the play. This famed score requires acrobatic vocal abilities from its leads, and despite a very belabored process on Beethoven's part, his reworked script has made itself into the hearts, minds and repertory of of opera goers and producers for centuries.

    »Carmen

    August 02, 2014 8:00 PM

This French-language opera by Georges Bizet broke with the traditional division between serious and comic operas, introducing a realistic approach to the subject matter. The title character, Carmen, is a boisterous and sensual gypsy girl, who catches the eye of a corporal, Don Jose, in the cigarette factory where she works. They fall in love and she seduces him to abandon his life in the military to come dwell with her and other smugglers in a hideaway in the mountains. Their love suffers, fading under the strain of hiding, and when Don Jose discovers that his mother is ill, he leaves, promising Carmen that they will meet again. In the final act, Carmen has a new lover, a victorious bullfighter, and Jose returns to win her love. But she is unmovable, proclaiming that she will live her life with the freedom she craves. Jose cannot bear it and kills her in front of the crowd. This tragicomic ode to love and its wild, charismatic heroine have won its place in the hearts and imaginations of opera-goers and artists since its premiere in 1875, and will continue as it is performed around the world for generations to come.
