The Knott House Museum at the city center was built in the year 1843 and served as a residence for prominent people as well as a headquarters for Union Army during the Civil War. The house is believed to be built by free black builder George Proctor and it is on the footsteps of the house where the proclamation for freedom of slaves from Florida Panhandle was announced in 1865. Today, the house is under the administration of Museum of Florida History and houses collection of poems and belongings of the houses most beloved resident Luella Knott. Most of the poems were based on the furnishings of the house and thus, giving it the house the name 'The House That Rhymes'. Call or visit their website for information about guided tours.
