Fusing classic rock, punk and country folk, hardcore band the Meat Puppets was the longest-lasting of all the bands on the 1980s seminal hardcore label SST. Centered around the duo of Curt and Cris Kirkwood, the Meat Puppets played music that was always smart, tuneful and true to its hard rock roots--even when the band experienced its brief flirtation with the mainstream in the early 1990s, largely a result of its friendship with grunge kingpins, Nirvana.

Inspired by a fiery combination of heavy metal and Latin rock, Rodrigo y Gabriela has created a sound so truly unique that it could only have stemmed from two seemingly incompatible genres. Known for their quick paced playing style, two acoustic guitars are all this Mexico based pair needs to create a monster sound. Rodrigo Sanchez utilizes insanely fast finger picking while Gabriela Quintero layers multiple beats on rhythm guitar, producing a full sound without the help of a drummer, bassist, or any synthesized sounds.

Los Angeles-based girl group, Dum Dum Girls, is essentially a modern lo-fi version of The Ronettes. While this was the image the group initially strove for, the four young ladies have since attempted to broaden their sound and improve their dexterity on their respective instruments. Though it has seen members come and go - including those affiliated with Crystal Stilts, Vivian Girls, La Sera and Grand Ole Party - Dum Dum Girls still manages to produce catchy, hook-filled pop, bolstered by a live show that includes band members wearing complimentary costumes.

Pond is an Australian psyc-rock band that's comprised of three members of the indie rock group Tame Impala. Crafting 1960s-inspired surf rock tunes that hark back to the glory days of jangle pop, Pond has received critical praise for itself ever since it released its debut album, Corridors of Blissterday, in 2009. Though known my serious music connoisseurs in Australia, the band has yet to truly break through in the United States or elsewhere, something that'll no doubt change as the group continues to release music and tour.
