»Dark Star Orchestra

November 26, 2014 8:00 PM

Have you ever loved something so much that you couldn't let go? A dying pet that you've come to love, a significant other that's starting to wreak havoc on your soul, or, in this case, a band that ran its dutiful course decades ago. The Grateful Dead was a wonderful sonic phenomenon that helped breathe life into the jam band genre, but after decades spent on the road the band became somewhat of a cliche of itself and after lead guitarist Jerry Garcia died in 1995, the group was done and it disbanded. But a few musicians decided to recreate the Dead's music on a regular basis. This band is called Dark Star Orchestra and it's basically a Grateful Dead cover band that performs tried and true tunes that helped make the Dead a jam band establishment.

»Slayer

November 26, 2014 8:00 PM

Slayer has been called the heaviest band in the world. The group's vicious guitar shredding and thundering double bass rhythm section combine with screaming vocals that cover topics like serial killers, Satanism, religion and warfare to create an intense onslaught of noise. The group was founded in Huntington Park, California in the early 1980s but the band didn't break big until producer extraordinaire Rick Rubin noticed the group in 1986 and offered them a recording contract. The Rubin-produced Reign in Blood has been called a metal masterpiece and is credited for establishing Slayer as one of the more important metal bands in history.

»Enter The Haggis

November 26, 2014 8:00 PM

In the later 1990s, a group of Canadian music and arts students came together in Toronto in the interest of creating rock-infused Celtic music. The result was Enter the Haggis, a seven-piece band that not only incorporates the two aforementioned genres, but also heavy doses of folk and jam band styles as well. Enter the Haggis combines the instrumentation of a traditional rock band (drums, bass, guitars) and incorporates traditional Irish elements, including two fiddle players. The group's commitment to touring has slowly but surely won it pockets of die-hard fans (referred to as "Haggis Heads") throughout Canada, the United States and even Western Europe. Its success has led to appearances on PBS and Live with Regis and Kelly.

The six-piece newgrass outfit Railroad Earth is a New Jersey-based band that takes its name from the Jack Kerouac short story "October in the Railroad Earth." Formed in 2001, the band combines elements of Americana, bluegrass, rock and jazz but is primarily known as a jam band due to its live improvisation at shows. After recording a five track demo, the band immediately secured a spot at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and released its debut album The Black Bear Sessions. Railroad Earth has since released several LPs of its rootsy, Americana brand of music including its critically acclaimed follow-up record, Bird In A House.
