His 1996 debut single "Barely Breathing," earned him immediate commercial and critical attention, including a Grammy Award nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. He released his eponymous first LP later the same year, and continued to write songs while also expanding his work into the realms of feature films and Broadway stages. Sheik went on to score various Broadway productions, including the multiple award-winning musical Spring Awakening, and contribute to the soundtrack of movies and television shows such as the independent film Transamerica and HBO's Girls. He released his seventh studio album, Covers 80's, in 2011.
