Governor Alexander Spotswood (Governor of Virginia Colony) leaded and supervised the construction of Fort Christanna. The fort was constructed to protect Indians and local settlements; a school was also started where English and Religion were taught to the students. Owing to the treaty signed in 1718, the school was shut and fort was closed. Now the site is open to tourists and Fort Christanna Site Development Committee and the Brunswick County/Lake Gaston Tourism Association, Inc. maintains and manages the site.
