    »Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks

    September 09, 2014 9:00 PM

Going the solo route after the breakup of Pavement, his iconic 1990s indie rock band, Stephen Malkmus has carried on his former group's quirky legacy while adding new dimensions to his songwriting with his solo career. Malkmus formed The Jicks in Portland in the early 2000s, rounding up a cast of local musicians that included Sleater Kinney's Janet Weiss on drums. Early albums displayed the playful wordplay and shaggy indie rock that Pavement fans had come to know and love, while later efforts have found Malkmus embracing his inner guitar god, with long, jammy passages often taking center stage. Both with the Jicks and on his own, Malkmus has found a new outlet that is quickly becoming as beloved and respected as the now legendary output of his former band.

    »Chad Vangaalen

    September 11, 2014

Chad VanGaalen is a Canadian indie rock singer/songwriter from Calgary. Since early on in his career, VanGaalen has been adamant about handling his own artistic affairs. His early albums were recorded on his own in his bedroom and released independently, along with his accompanying hand-drawn artwork. It didn't take long for independent heavyweight label Sub Pop to take notice, and soon he was creating well-received LPs full of quirky indie pop with occasional forays into driving, garage-influenced rock and roll. VanGaalen is the kind of indie rock songwriter who seems to always fly just under the radar; his devoted following, however, appreciates his stylistic left-turns and attests to the strength of his skewered lo-fi pop style.

    »Daniel Adams-ray

    September 11, 2014

Daniel Adams-Ray is a Swedish singer, rapper and artist who released his first official solo-album in 2010. Adams-Ray combines smooth melodies with jumpy European hip-hop beats to forge his own brand of music. Adams-Ray debuted on the music with the Swedish rap outfit Snook, with his friend Oskar Linnros, and at first the duo was heavily criticized for being non-urban wealthy rappers - which is something Daniel Adams-Ray has had to come to terms with in his solo ventures. Most of his artwork involves splotches of bright neon colors everywhere and his music follows the same aesthetic, with scatterbrained and stream of conscious lyrics.
