    »Fat White Family

    September 22, 2014 8:30 PM

Fat White Family is a band from London that makes a style of music that evokes druggy imagery and languid tactile senses.Formed in 2011, the group's throwback 1960s psychedelic sound is blended with a more modern, garage rock approach to create some listen worthy material that's well suited for London's multifaceted music scene. Though many bands nowadays dress the part to build street cred and be sold in an packageable manner, after listening to Fat White Family, one gets the impression that the lads in the band are a direct byproduct of the rough and tumble streets, and are willing to walk the walk if called to.

    »Max Raabe & Palast Orchester

    September 22, 2014 7:30 PM

Max Raabe & Palast Orchester is a musical ensemble based in Berlin. Fascinated with the music and style of the past, leader and vocalist Max Raabe created the orchestra in 1985 with his fellow students of music at the Berlin University of Fine Arts. Together they use original dance band arrangements from the 1920s and 1930s, bringing back what Raabe calls the golden period of dance music. Dressed in vintage fine dining attire, Max Raabe & Palast Orchester evoke the glamour of German cabaret with timeless melodies and humor. The orchestra, made up of 13 men and a single female violinist, invokes sensational nostalgia with smooth talent and a recaptured wit from decades passed.

    »Avi Buffalo

    September 24, 2014

Southern California-based indie folk outfit Avi Buffalo (a spin on the name of chief songwriter, Avigdor Zahner-Isenberg) had the fortunate pleasure of signing with Sub Pop Records when its members were just barely out of high school. It's not difficult to see what the popular label saw in the band, however, as the Long Beach duo creates sparkling folk tunes that can hold up with the best of its contemporaries. Comparisons to the acoustic-based indie rock of groups such as The Shins and The Fruit Bats are practically inevitable, but Avi Buffalo brings enough to the table to avoid claims of complete derivation. Zahner-Isenberg is a creative songwriter whose hooks are catchy but rarely glaringly obvious or heavy-handed, which, coupled with the high-pitched, unique timbre of his voice, adds up to a strong combination of charm and fun, breezy pop.

    »Helmet

    September 25, 2014

Some bands are incapable of creating an original sound that defines the group and solidifies its role in the progression of recorded music. Other bands arrive at grandeur almost inadvertently; one such group is the New York alternative metal outfit Helmet. The band was formed in 1989 and has experienced a number of ups and downs during its tumultuous existence as a band. Despite breaking up in 1998, the band got back together in 2004 and has since dedicated itself to a respectable touring and recording schedule.
