Glemmen Kirke is one of the oldest standing structures in Fredrikstad since its construction in the year 1100. Romanesque architecture, created only out of rubble has withstood the test of time. Various family centered events and programs are held regularly here, to instill and encourage the growth of christian values in children and adults alike. Apart from being a tourist attraction, Glemmen Kirke is a community center for the local population of Fredrikstad which caters to the regional christian population.
The original stone church of Skiptvet was built between 1150 and 1200. After the restoration under Architect Harald Sund and painter Ulrik Hendriksen in 1937; the altarpiece and the pulpit by Albert Lobach are the only remaining artifacts from the old church. Today the church offers the community with not only worship but also services like day care and much more.
Dedicated to St. Olav, Eidsberg kirke is the oldest surviving medieval church in the town, dating back to 1200s. The current church is a stonework structure in a Gothic style, which has been remodeled in 1880 and later in 1959. For good reason,it stands amongst the distinguished list of Cultural Heritage sites of Norway. Essentially a working church today, the Eidsberg kirke enriches community living by not only the services it offers but also various activities it undertakes like education projects, day care and much more.
Fredriksten Fortress was built in 1643-45 and was the first defensive building in Halden. It was built to defend Norway's border with Sweden. A visit to the fortress, with its well preserved buildings and bastions, almost brings you back in time. The grounds also contain a restaurant and several museums. You are welcome to bring your own picnic. It is free to visit the fortress itself; the museum has an entrance fee.
