»Crowns

April 19, 2015 2:00 PM

A powerful exploration of African-American history and identity, "Crowns" follows six black women in the South whose stories of love, loss and sisterhood are woven into the hats that crown their heads and the dynamic gospel songs that speak their truth. The story centers on Chicago-born Yolanda, who is sent down South after the death of her brother in Brooklyn. There, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her -- and in the rituals connected to their dazzling headwear. Penned by award-winning playwright and actress Regina Taylor ("I'll Fly Away", "The Unit"), this stirring musical delivers a good time at the Educational Cultural Complex while tracing the roots of gospel through hip-hop, dance and cultural history.

»Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

April 19, 2015 2:00 PM

The biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors is brought to vibrant life by the blockbuster musical-theater team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice ("Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita"). This light-hearted, pop-music parable is based on the Book of Genesis story about the young man who's sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and ends up in Egypt, where he rises through the ranks and grapples with the pharaoh -- who's portrayed in the hilariously flamboyant style of Elvis. Set to a high-energy mix of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock, this Old Testament tale has proven to be truly timeless. This Lamb's Players Theatre production hits the stage at San Diego's Horton Grand Theatre.

»Parallel Lives

April 19, 2015 4:00 PM

To describe "Parallel Lives" as a collection of grade-A quality "SNL" sketches played by two female comedians who take on an impressive array of characters is true, but not the whole truth. For what makes "Parallel Lives" so special is not the comedy -- although creators Mo Gaffney and Kathy Najimy are very, very funny writers -- or the characters -- although each one is strong enough to carry a show of its own -- but the quiet moments. For in this wide-ranging collection of laugh-out-loud scenes, there are glimpses of heartbreak and powerful epiphanies. It's those intensely real moments that elevate "Parallel Lives" from a very good comedy to a great piece of theater. Experience it yourself when Sandy Hotchkiss and Rhiannon Jones star in this smart, provocative show from Talent to aMuse Theatre Company.

Thinking about trying stand up comedy? Ready to take the leap? We’re proud to have a supportive staff and an awesome group of comics performing on our open mic, so relax, grab some friends and come have a great time. Read below for sign up instructions. If you’re not ready yet, the show’s free so come by, hang out, grab a drink, talk to some of the comics, and check out the show. Here’s how the open mic works. Unless something odd happens, we have open mics on Sunday and Monday @ 8:30pm To perform you need to email openmic@madhousecomedyclub.com by 4pm on Sunday of the week you'd like to perform. List your name, and which open mic you’d like to perform on. It’s completely okay to ask for both shows if you wish. We have far more comics emailing in to perform on the open mic than we have spots for. At 4pm the email period closes, a random drawing is done to see which comedians will perform. You will receive an email between 5pm and 6pm on Sunday to let you know if your name was selected for either of the shows. There is a second way onto the open mic shows. If your name was not selected, you can show up on Sunday, Monday, or both days, and sign up on the “alternate list”. The alternate list is not a guarantee. When comedians don’t show up, or we have extra time, the host will pull comedians from the alternate list. Sometime they make it through the entire alternate list, and sometimes they don’t get to it at all. The list is made available for sign ups around 8:00 on both days. To use the alternate list, you have to physically be at the club, you can’t add your name via phone/email etc. Note a couple things. · Sets are 5 min. · Sets are uncensored. · If you go over the 5min set time you will be played off stage. · Check in with the host when you arrive at the club. · The order comedians will go onstage is made by the host, at show time. Please do not call the comedy club and ask when your time slot is, as the operator won’t know. · Please do not call the club to see if you’re on the show. We will email you to let you know either way. · There is no two drink min for the open mic shows, and there is never a two drink min for any performing comedian at the Mad House Comedy Club regardless of the night or show.

»Uncanny Valley

April 19, 2015 2:00 PM

If you've ever been weirded out by a leering ventriloquist's dummy or gotten the willies from the twitching animatronics at Chuck E. Cheese, you've been to the "uncanny valley." Described as the discomfort people feel when confronted by objects that look and move almost but not "quite" like real humans, this ambivalent state permeates the new play "Uncanny Valley", at the San Diego REP. Neuroscientist Claire has spent her career trying to craft a "non-biological being." Her latest attempt, Julian, is "born" over the course of the play -- going from just a head to a fully functional body -- as Claire teaches him what it is to be human. But when Claire finally comes face to face with her creation, she's shocked to discover just who is staring back at her. Jessica Bird directs the latest from playwright Thomas Gibbons.
