»Crowns

April 25, 2015 7:00 PM

A powerful exploration of African-American history and identity, "Crowns" follows six black women in the South whose stories of love, loss and sisterhood are woven into the hats that crown their heads and the dynamic gospel songs that speak their truth. The story centers on Chicago-born Yolanda, who is sent down South after the death of her brother in Brooklyn. There, she finds strength in the tales of the wise women who surround her -- and in the rituals connected to their dazzling headwear. Penned by award-winning playwright and actress Regina Taylor ("I'll Fly Away", "The Unit"), this stirring musical delivers a good time at the Educational Cultural Complex while tracing the roots of gospel through hip-hop, dance and cultural history.

»Los Angeles Dodgers At San Diego Padres

April 25, 2015 5:40 PM

The Los Angeles Dodgers are a Major League Baseball team and a member of the National League West Division. The franchise was established in Brooklyn in 1883. The team had several names over the first 50 years, until finally adopting the name "Dodgers" in 1932. The Dodgers made baseball history in 1947 when owner Branch Rickey signed Jackie Robinson to a contract. Robinson became the first African-American baseball player in Major League Baseball. He won the Rookie of the Year award that same year. Before the 1958 season, the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. That same year, the Giants also moved from New York to California. Bitter rivals in New York, the two franchises remain hated opponents today. Some of the best players in Dodgers history include Sandy Koufax, Jackie Robinson, Don Drysdale and Duke Snider.

»Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

April 25, 2015 4:00 PM

The biblical saga of Joseph and his coat of many colors is brought to vibrant life by the blockbuster musical-theater team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice ("Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita"). This light-hearted, pop-music parable is based on the Book of Genesis story about the young man who's sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and ends up in Egypt, where he rises through the ranks and grapples with the pharaoh -- who's portrayed in the hilariously flamboyant style of Elvis. Set to a high-energy mix of musical styles, from country-western and calypso to bubble-gum pop and rock, this Old Testament tale has proven to be truly timeless. This Lamb's Players Theatre production hits the stage at San Diego's Horton Grand Theatre.

»Michael Feinstein

April 25, 2015 8:00 PM

From a young age Michael Feinstein had a strong interest in music. Born and raised in Columbus, OH Feinstein's mother hired a piano teacher to instruct him, although it soon became clear that he wasn't keen on the idea of reading sheet music. Nevertheless, Feinstein demonstrated a nearly inherent knack for playing the piano--prompting his mother to fire the piano teacher and let her son enjoy and learn compositional styles on his own terms. After graduating from high school, he would go on to play piano in a number of different lounges and bars around Ohio until he was motivated to move out to Los Angeles when he was 20 years old. Shortly after moving to California, he was introduced to Ira Girshwin who asked Feinstein to catalog his music as well as his brother's, George Gershwin. This massive project instilled within Feinstein a massive respect and love of both Gershwins' styles and although dedicating a lot of time to his archiving project, he managed to build a name for himself at the same time by performing in a number of different cabarets and musical reviews--a reputation he has managed to keep to this day.

»Uncanny Valley

April 25, 2015 2:00 PM

If you've ever been weirded out by a leering ventriloquist's dummy or gotten the willies from the twitching animatronics at Chuck E. Cheese, you've been to the "uncanny valley." Described as the discomfort people feel when confronted by objects that look and move almost but not "quite" like real humans, this ambivalent state permeates the new play "Uncanny Valley", at the San Diego REP. Neuroscientist Claire has spent her career trying to craft a "non-biological being." Her latest attempt, Julian, is "born" over the course of the play -- going from just a head to a fully functional body -- as Claire teaches him what it is to be human. But when Claire finally comes face to face with her creation, she's shocked to discover just who is staring back at her. Jessica Bird directs the latest from playwright Thomas Gibbons.
