At the Wine Bank, separate rooms are devoted to the output of specific nations or, in some cases, to a particular type of wine, allowing easy comparisons. Regular wine tastings are scheduled. Situated appropriately enough in the beautiful historic Brunswick Building in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter, this is a favorite browsing and shopping venue for stylish antiques and knick-knacks. There is always interesting European china and porcelain on display, together with distinctive antique and vintage jewelry, fashion and floral prints of yesteryear and some pieces of vintage furniture to delight the discerning buyer. As with so many shops in this quarter of San Diego, it is a pleasure to enter the its door.
5 & A Dime started out as a small store but is now one of the best retail stores in all of San Diego. It's got the hottest labels including WOODMAN, Flying Coffin, Richer Poorer, and Rustic Dime. At 5 & A Dime, they've got everything from t-shirts to funky toys to sports shoes. If that isn't enough, get a steal on the summer warehouse sale, where the policy is, everything must go! From good bargains to cool bikes, latest music tracks to chilling with the gang, 5 & A Dime is a cool hang out for guys and gals who know how to have a good time!
The Gaslamp Quarter location of this cupcake specialty "lounge" is a little unfair to locals—far more conventioneers get to sample the wares at this artisanal cupcake shop. The available flavors change daily and with the seasons, with a few standards which are always available, such as red velvet and orange chip. In fall, the favorite is the pumpkin cupcake adorned with ginger cream cheese icing, and topped with their signature candy halo ring. Seating is limited, and this is not a place for the sugar-phobic or low-carb dieter. But it's a great place to grab an easy sugar rush to prepare for a night downtown.
While the eponymous chocolate rules the roost here, this small, friendly cafe also offers breakfast, lunch and dinner options, ranging from a fresh-baked croissant to egg dishes and savory crepes filled with spiced cheeses and imported ham; there's also a few choice pasta dishes. Working from intense chocolate stocks such as roc lait, virgole, and gascon, these core ingredients turn into everything from towering cakes and pastries to Sicilian gelatos and sinfully-rich, European-style hot chocolates and chocolate-infused coffees. - deTraci Regula
