For more than 20 years, Via Lago Trattoria—part of the Busalacchi restaurant family—has sought to make dining-out a family experience. For lunch, guests can enjoy Margherita or Salmone pizza, as well as the more traditional pepperoni pizza. Or guests can order spaghetti, lasagna, or various other pastas. For dinner, Via Lago Trattoria serves many of the same dishes, as well as pastas like Lobster Ravioli and Melanzane Parmagiana, as well as various chicken and meat dishes. At Via Lago Trattoria, the bar is always open; and from 3p to 6:30p, they serve assorted olives, Portobello fries, fish tacos, pizzettes, and various other bites. For those guests who would like to give the gift of a fine-dining experience, Via Lago Trattoria offers gift cards. - Erick Pettersen

For the prices of their dishes, one might think Jalisco Café is a competitor in San Diego's unofficial food war, "Battle of the Bertos," but their quaint dining room, encased within a room of mirrors, will ensure guests that they will get much more for their money than what Albertos, Jilbertos, Robertos, or any other Bertos offers. The menu at Jalisco Café consists of many Mexican favorites, along with Jamon Con Jeuvos (charbroiled ham and three eggs, served with beans and tortillas), Machaca burrito, jack cheese/green chille enchiladas, and many other great dishes. Also offered is a children's and a senior's menu, as well as free birthday dinners for those who bring their I.D. and three guests. - Erick Pettersen

If your San Diego area travels take you to South County, this is the place for a great American breakfast. The homemade pancakes come in a variety of flavors and types, but one don't-miss item is the Steak and Eggs. The juicy, well-prepared, ample piece of excellent beef is served with home-fried potatoes and eggs with pancakes on the side. Big portions make this spot popular with local workers and businesspeople. More than one big deal has been closed here over a plate of pancakes.
