February 27, 2015 8:00 PM

Recently one of the hottest tickets on Broadway and a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize, "Other Desert Cities" brings dysfunctional family drama to new heights. Christmas is always somewhat surreal in Palm Springs, but it gets even crazier when once-promising novelist Brooke Wyeth returns home after a long absence and brings along her tell-all memoir that exposes a tragic event in her family's history. Her well-connected, super-Republican parents aren't too pleased with this revelation. As if that's not enough, liberal Aunt Silda is also home for the holidays, fresh from rehab. The result is a smart and entertaining family portrait filled with biting wit, razor-sharp insight and shrewd political commentary that heats up the Sandra R. Courtney Community Playhouse stage in Rialto.

»Gypsy

February 27, 2015 7:30 PM

"The New York Times" has called "Gypsy" possibly "the greatest of all American musicals" -- and Mama Rose wouldn't have had it any other way. Only a musical as epic as "Gypsy" could capture the real-life Rose, the ultimate stage mom, who groomed her two daughters to be vaudeville stars ... only to see one of them leave it all behind to become a burlesque sensation. With a book by Arthur Laurents ("West Side Story"), music by Jule Styne ("Funny Girl") and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim ("Into the Woods"), the multiple Tony Award winner is the very definition of a "must-see" musical. Enjoy crowd-pleasing classics like "Everything's Coming Up Roses," "Let Me Entertain You," "You Gotta Get a Gimmick" and the show-stopping "Rose's Turn" during this fun production from Center Stage Theater that includes a delicious dinner.

»Dracula, The Musical

February 27, 2015 7:29 PM

The spine-tingling story of an immortal bloodsucking creature of the night continues to be re-"vamped," as the Victorian novel that started it all, Bram Stoker's "Dracula", comes to Upland's The Grove Theatre in musical form. This dramatic staging moves from England to Transylvania and back as it focuses on Count Dracula's strange psychic connection with the young Mina, endangering her friend Lucy, and pitting him against the famed vampire hunter Van Helsing. The show premiered on Broadway in 2004, featuring a score by the Tony-nominated Frank Wildhorn ("The Scarlet Pimpernel, Bonnie & Clyde") and lyrics and book co-written by Oscar-winner Christopher Hampton ("Dangerous Liaisons").
