Vatican's oldest church still extant, St Stephen of the Abyssinians is apportioned to Stephen the Promartyr. Constructed by Pope Leo I, it was initially christened as Santo Stefano Maggiore and remodeled by Pope Alexander III in the year 1159. Pope Alexander III also erected a monastery for monks coming from Ethiopia. The church's facade is a typical example of 18th-century architecture. The doorway adorned with Cross and Lamb dates back to the 12th Century and is well preserved. One of the most arresting adornments is an illustration of Madonna with Child in Roman design and dating back to the 15th Century.
The church of San Gioacchino stands on one side of Piazza dei Quiriti - its refined and elegant exterior immediately attracts attention. It is impossible to miss the mosaics on the façade and dome, which are made from crystal stars. The dome is made entirely from aluminium and is crowned with eight angels with their wings spread at the edges. The church was designed and built by Lorenzo De Rossi and Raffaele Ingami and inaugurated in 1898, but the decorations were only completed in 1940 following financial help from 24 countries. Inside there are 14 chapels, each one named after the country that contributed to its decoration.
Completed in the 15th Century, Santa Maria della Pieta in Camposanto dei Teutonici lies adjacent to the historic German burial ground. The site on which the church stands was managed by Schola Francorum, a health center built for German travelers visiting Vatican on pilgrimage. The chapel on the church's left features striking Baroque architecture. It is dedicated to Swiss Guards martyred in Sack of Rome. Today, Santa Maria della Pieta in Camposanto dei Teutonici remains a significant meeting place for Rome's German-speaking population.
People come by the millions each year to receive the Pope's blessing, traditionally given on Sundays at noon. St Peter's has undergone many transformations since the original Constantine basilica of 320 CE. The top of its majestic dome (designed by Michelangelo), provides the best vantage point from which to marvel at Bernini's magnificent colonnade surrounding the square, the gilded bronze canopy above the altar and Michelangelo's Pietà (1499). Bramante, Pietro da Cortona and Canova are just a handful of the many other artists who worked together on this monumental basilica's decoration and design.
