    »Fetch Clay, Make Man

    October 23, 2014 7:30 PM

It was a pairing so strange it could only be true. "Fetch Clay, Make Man" tells the story of the remarkable relationship between Muhammad Ali and Stepin Fetchit. Set mostly in 1965, Ali -- who until his recent membership into the Nation of Islam was known as Cassius Clay -- is winning both bouts in the boxing ring and arguments about the ability and dignity of African Americans. Meanwhile, the faded Fetchit represents an older, uglier era. Having once made millions playing racist stereotypes on the silver screen in the '20s, '30s and '40s, the truly talented actor is now broke and half-forgotten. Yet, in the days leading up to one of Ali's most anticipated matchups, the prizefighter and the movie star form an unlikely and revealing friendship.

West Virginia-based artist Kathy Mattea is a bluegrass singer/songwriter and guitarist with Celtic, traditional country and folk influences. She first saw commercial acclaim with her 1986's Walk the Way the Wind Blows, which captured audiences with its folky, accessible lyrics. Industry attention came shortly after in 1990 with the release of her track "Where've You Been," a bleeding-heart song that earned Mattea the 1990 Grammy Award for Best Female Country Vocals, as well as her 1993 Christmas album Good News. With over a dozen studio albums spanning four decades, Mattea has maintained a modern country sound by incorporating several different genres such as gospel and traditional styles into her music.

Anthony Jeselnik is an American stand-up comedian from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He achieved a lot in a relatively short amount of time, finding his way to appearances on Late Night with Conan O'Brien, Last Call with Carson Daly and Jimmy Kimmel Live by the time he reached his 30s. Jeselnik's style is largely based on shock humor, as he doesn't shy away from any topic, no matter how taboo or controversial. However, his inherent intelligence and ability to deliver well-constructed punchlines ensure that there is always plenty of thought out, cerebral wit behind his jokes. He now resides in New York City and has become a regular on Comedy Central's popular series of celebrity roasts.
