    »Playhouse Jr.

    Playhouse Jr. is the second oldest children's theater in the United States. Since 1949, the theater has been introducing children to the exciting world of drama with productions that feature classic children's stories. The theater stages five productions each season. The plays revolve around tales about Sleeping Beauty, Robin Hood and the Pied Piper. More than 45,000 people a year attend these productions. The theater is associated with Point Park College.

    The community flocks to Schenley Park, a green oasis in the midst of a bustling city, for concerts, plays and movies. Phipps Conservatory is located on the northern end of the park, which is set between Oakland and Squirrel Hill, close to Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh. Hikers love the winding trails and children gather at the swimming pool during summer. In the winter, visitors can ice skate at the rink or cross-country ski.     »Eliza Furnace Trail

    A Part of the Three River Trail that runs parallel to the three rivers of Pittsburgh- Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio, the Eliza Furnace Trail is located about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) from central Pittsburgh. The 4 mile-long (6.4 kilometers) trail meets the northern bank of the Monongahela River on one side while the other meets the Panther Hollow Trail. The urban railroad trail is well-maintained and convenient to reach.

    The Three Rivers Heritage Trail System is a beautiful trail running along the rivers of Pittsburgh. The 25 mile (40 kilometer) trail serves as a great recreational option within the city limits. The trail offers picturesque views of the city on either sides, thus making it a great spot for outdoor junkies. The beautiful trail is promoted, protected and preserved by an organization called Friends of the Riverfront. A lot of activities and events take place on this trail, for all the nature enthusiasts in the city.

    »Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park

    Bob O'Connor Golf Course at Schenley Park is one of few golf courses in Pittsburgh proper. The course is an executive length at 4,620 yards (4335 meters). The par 67 course lets golfers test their expertise as they shoot across roads; there are at least six highway hazards. The course is part of Schenley Park and is open year round.  Although electric carts are not available, pull carts are offered reasonable prices. The course offers a pro shop, putting greens, a restaurant and lessons from the golf pro.

    Society for Contemporary Craft hosts a variety of exhibitions for local and national craft artists. The center includes a children's studio, where kids receive a hands-on experience in various artistic mediums. Various workshops are provided for adults and children, and have covered everything from creating jewelry, to puppet making, to tours of glass studios. Guided tours are available for schools. The store sells a variety of crafts. All proceeds benefit the society and the artist.

    There is no better place to honor the American flag than at the Flag Plaza and Pittsburgh Scout Center. Every evening, if the weather is nice, a flag ceremony is held at the downtown offices. The 15-minute ceremony is held in addition to two short films that teach viewers the importance of the American flag and how to care for the nation's most identifiable symbol. Admission is free and recommended for children over 8 years old. Visitors should call to check the schedule for the flag ceremony. it is open Monday to Friday from 5 pm.
