Carnegie Mellon University is a prestigious institute of higher learning in Pittsburgh. The university was founded in 1900 by steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie as Carnegie Technical School. Carnegie's original goal was to start a trade school for the working class people of the city. In 1912, it began offering four year degrees and changed its name to the Carnegie Institute of Technology. In 1965, following a merger with Mellon Institute of Industrial Research, it became what it is today, Carnegie Mellon University. The university is located on a picturesque campus that sprawls over 140 acres and has a student body of more than 10,000.
