Allegheny County Courthouse

436 Grant Street
Pittsburgh, PA 15219
Henry Hobson Richardson, one of the most important American architects of the late 19th century, won a design competition to build this courthouse in 1884. True to his style, Richardson created an impressive structure with an interior full of Romanesque architecture, vaulted ceilings, archways, and winding staircases. Today the original lobby entrance is located on the second floor of the building, after a 1912 project lowered the streets of the area. Once within the lobby, you can visit the interior courtyard, walkway to the old prison, and restored rooms that showcase the original style and decor. Even though it is a fully functioning courthouse, this historic site is worth a visit on its own.
