»The Arkells

November 27, 2014 8:00 PM

The Ontario, Canada-based band Arkells is one of the region's more recent success stories, winning Canada's prestigious Juno Music Award for "New Group of the Year" in 2010. The group has scored modest hits with "Oh, The Boss Is Coming!" a cheeky pop rock tune about making sure you look busy at work. The band is known for a penchant for fun in its music--a refreshing change of pace amidst a pop market awash in depressive, self-loathing characters and songs.

Emmure is a death core band from Queens, New York that has experienced a steady stream of success since it emerged in 2003. Despite its less than pristine record with critics, Emmure has continued to expand its following with a straightforward, no frills style. Emmure has released several albums since their 2007 debut LP, Goodbye to the Gallows, including what some consider to be the band's magnum opus, the 2011 full-length recordSpeaker of the Dead.

»Ryerson Theatre School: Cinderella

November 27, 2014 6:00 PM

Based on the classic folk tale by French author Charles Perrault, Cinderella follows the story of a young woman whose life of hardships is turned upside down. Though there have been thousands of adaptations for both the stage and big screen in several different languages, the foundation of the tale is often left untouched. A common version depicts Cinderella living a ragged life under the control of her stepmother and stepsisters, who are jealous of Cinderella's beauty and grace. When Cinderella's cruel family prevents her from attending the royal ball for Prince Charming, an attempt by the King and Queen to find a bride for their son, her fairy godmother comes to her aid and transforms her rags into a beautiful gown. Cinderella shows up to the ball and immediately catches the eye of Prince Charming, but she is forced to abruptly leave the party at midnight, when she returns to her true form, before the Prince can catch her name. A tale of hope and overcoming obstacles, Cinderella is an enduring narrative that has proven its lasting power through centuries of storytelling.
