Big Country is an alternative rock band from Fife, Scotland that reached the height of its popularity in the mid 1980s but has since achieved a large cult following that continues to this day. Although the band is a rock band at its core, the members of Big Country infuse the folk sounds of their native Scotland while engineering a special technique for their guitars that mimic the inspirational sounds of bagpipes and other traditional Scottish instruments. The band's biggest hit came in the form of its second studio album Steeltown, which would immediately place Big Country at #1 on the UK Album Charts in 1984. Although the band's popularity tapered off significantly in the 1990s, Big Country still remains one of the United Kingdom's more legendary acts of the 1980s, with a cult following that still keeps the band on the move even to this day.

»Focus Exhibition: Lockwood De Forest’s The Wreck

January 30, 2015 1:00 PM

Lockwood De Forest (1850-1932) was an artist who was a well-traveled man and son of a wealthy family. His famous painting The Wreck has been exhibited many times, three times alone in 1880 - at The Century Association, the National Academy of Design in New York City and at the Louisville Industrial Exhibition in Kentucky. The Wreck thematizes life and death in a desert setting. This circle of life is timeless and the skill with which De Forest used his brush and commitment of colors makes the painting seem alive.

Join Orlando Ballet and The Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra as they transport audiences for an evening of mice, sugar plums and ginger.  Motown the Musical | MARCH 10 15, 2015 Written by label founder Berry Gordy, Motown: The Musical charts the meteoric career of Gordy from his days as a wannabe boxer in Detroit to his position as the head of the Motown record label. As Gordy discovers new talents like Smokey Robinson, Marvin Gaye, Michael Jackson and The Supremes, he also finds himself entangled in a drama-fueled romance with Diana Ross. The show stretches across decades as it tells the true story of Gordy - and Motowns - rise to fame. Featuring an ensemble cast of more than 40 actors, Motown: The Musical is an explosive new musical featuring almost 60 of the most beloved hits in the Motown music catalogue. Many of the songs are sung in medleys by the shows talented cast, channeling legends like Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Mary Wells and the Jackson 5 in a dazzling non-stop display of music and dancing that will please fans both young and old.  Pippin | APRIL 21 26, 2015 Diane Paulus new, circus-inspired production of Pippin features an acrobatic troupe of performers, led by the charismatic Leading Player. The ensemble cast tells the story of Pippin, a young prince who longs to find passion and adventure in his life. To prove his loyalty to his distracted father, King Charles, Pippin goes to war. But when the Leading Player convinces the prince to fight tyranny, Pippin kills Charles and takes over the throne. Realizing his mistake, Pippin begs the Leading Player to bring his father back to life, and she obliges. The prince falls in love with Catherine, a widow with a young son, and (much to the Leading Players chagrin), Pippin struggles to decide whether he should settle down and pursue a peaceful life or continue to make magic with the dazzling troupe of performers. From the moment the Leading Player beckons the audience into the big top, the first-ever Broadway revival of Pippin is a sensational spectacle. As the story unfolds, acrobats fly through the air, contort themselves into impressive positions and perform classic circus tricks. Even the leading actors get in on the action, throwing swords, riding unicycles, hula hooping, and even flying on the trapeze. Pippin is a two-and-a-half-hour, high-energy extravaganza that makes for a positively electrifying night at the theater. Disneys Beauty and the Beast has become an international sensation that has played to over 35 million people worldwide in 13 countries.

»Going Away To College Covering Blink 182 / Yugoskavia Covering Mad Ca

January 30, 2015 7:00 PM

Blink 182 is a band from San Diego that received mainstream cultural acceptance with the release of its third album, Enema of the State, in 1999. Initially formed in 1992 by three childhood friends, the members of the group took influences from punk bands like the Ramones, Bad Religion and The Offspring, and blended a simple yet aggressive instrumental style with a more commercially friendly pop sound to create a well balanced, pop-meets-punk sonic aesthetic. Though band's first drummer left Blink 182 in 1998, the two remaining members didn't hesitate to recruit noted punk stickman Travis Barker to hit the skins and cymbals. With a new drummer, Blink went on to attain the best success of its career. In the subsequent years, the group's popularity started to wane and in 2005, the three members decided to go their own respective ways. However, the magnetic energy of the trio was too much to ignore and in 2009, Blink 182 reformed and the band has managed to tour frequently and release new albums of original material ever since.
