Stop by the UTPB campus to witness a sight that you would otherwise have to travel to England to see. The University of Texas of the Permian Basin Stonehenge is a marvelous replica of the ancient Stonehenge in England. The replica is made up of 70 blocks of limestone salvaged from a nearby quarry, each of which weighs over 20,000 pounds. While the Odessa Stonehenge is remarkably similar in appearance to the original, the overall height falls short by about 3 feet. Nevertheless this modern day monument makes for quite a stunning sight. While the original benefits from an aura of mystery, the Stonehenge at Odessa stands as a testament to the determination of the people who are responsible for its creation and their desire to enrich the city's cultural landscape in this rather ingenious way. The Stonehenge is located off the I-20 on the campus of the University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
The Woodson Family Aquatic Center is the perfect place to lounge around, get some sun, or for a dip in the pool. This center also features a sand volleyball court, picnic area, and a playground for the kids. What better way to enjoy a day in the Permian Basin's sun than a day at the pool.
The official location for the annual Juneteenth parade, Woodson Park is one of the best recreational facilities in Odessa. It also houses the Woodson Family Aquatic Facility, which has pools, playgrounds and water slides for the entire family to enjoy. A Community Center is also part of the premises, which can be hired as a venue for private events. Epitomizing the alpha and omega of recreation in the city, Woodson Park is 13 acres of complete fun.
Floyd Gwinn Park opened in 1945 as the first aquatic park in Odessa. Today this 40-acre park features two playgrounds, plus all the facilities to support your favorite sport. Floyd Gwinn has it all, from baseball and soccer, to basketball, tennis, and volleyball. You can also enjoy a swim in the community pool on a hot day. The park is also home to the Floyd Gwinn Gymnasium, which gives the community a facility to practice and participate in activities.
Located on the outskirts of Odessa, the Ratliff Ranch Golf Course is a beautiful Scottish links course with four different tee sets. The course comprises of rolling hills, elevated grounds and two small ponds with beautiful views of the West Texas countryside. A clubhouse with an in house restaurant is located here as well along with a servicing bar and grill, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner. A golfing pro shop on the site stocks a wide variety of expert sport equipment and apparel. A dress code is in affect at this club.
This 20 acre water park features a 500,000 gallon tumble wave pool, plus other spectacular water rides. While the park is only open from May through Labor Day weekend, visitors can cool off during Midland's hottest season. The Hero's Water World is great for the whole family for some fun in the sun adventures.
Beal Park is one of Midland's most popular outdoor recreation spots. While the little ones will enjoy clambering about at the playground, their teenage counterparts are sure to find the the skate park nearby is more to their liking. The park also features soccer, cricket and baseball fields, basketball courts, an amphitheater and picnic areas, alongside a pond that is stocked with trout. Bring along your fishing pole and indulge in a spot of fishing while the kids play nearby, or settle down with a pair of binoculars and keep an eye out for the many birds that frequent the pond. Beal Park is a family-friendly spot that has something to offer everyone.
Accessible via South Midland Drive, the I-20 Wildlife Preserve was established in January of 2013. Located just off the I-20 (thus the name), the preserve incorporates of more than 30 acres (12.14 hectares) of Texan playa. Just about 7 miles (11.26 kilometers) from Midland International Airport, I-20 Wildlife Preserve boasts of a rich biodiversity native to Texan wetland, that includes several birds, butterflies, badgers, bobcats, foxes, and rabbits, to name a few. About 20,000 square feet (1858.06 square meters) of the preserve is dedicated to Jenna Welch Nature Study Center. Open all year, I-20 Wildlife Preserve offers a range of educational programs, UG research programs and activities such as hiking, bird-watching and such.
The Putt Putt Fun Center has something that the whole family will enjoy. From go-carts, miniature golf, to lazer tag, batting cages, and more, everyone will have a blast figuring out what to do next. The Putt Putt Fun Center also has specials, like Funday Mondays and birthday parties.
The kids will love Dennis the Menace Park, as there is plenty to keep them busy in this three-acre park full of colorful playhouses and slides. This park was inspired in part by the Dennis the Menace Park in Monterey, California.
