Oceanside Museum of Art is a cultural jewel located in downtown Oceanside with a view of the Pacific Ocean and the historic Oceanside Pier. Housed in a classic Irving Gill designed building, it provides North San Diego County with five provocative exhibits each year. It also offers art instruction at the OMA-School of Art, chamber music in the museum galleries as part of the Pier View Way Concert Series. Spanning 1,942 feet, Oceanside Municipal Pier is one of the most notable piers in the western United States. Not only is it the longest wooden pier along the West Coast, but this spot also holds the title as the longest over-water pier in Southern California. The pier was was first built in the 19th century, then restored in 1987. It now houses a restaurant and snack bar as well as a bait and tackle shop. For those who do not wish to walk the distance of the pier, a tram is available for the journey.
While visiting the Oceanside area, it's expected that you will come down to see the ships at sea. But wouldn't you really rather be on one? Now you can. Even the least experienced skipper can rent a boat for an hour or a day. Whether your idea of wet and wild is a kayak, a Wave runner, a sailboat, a fishing skiff or a luxury yacht, this is where you can try your hand at the helm. Soak up the rays! This beach offers a vast shoreline for tanning and building sandcastles. During the summertime, it's quite pleasant for swimming and other water sports. Surfers will find a home at this beach as well, with the summer surf averaging four to seven feet. Surfing is restricted during the summer months to certain areas. At the Buena Vista Audubon Society’s Nature Center, trained docents lead various nature walks and classes. They tailor many of their nature walks to elementary students, but they also have classes about birds of prey for older kids and high school students. For those who would like to get the most out of the Buena Vista Audubon Society, there are various hikes and day camps for kids. For those who want to enjoy the nature center’s facilities, it offers taxidermies of various birds, fish and other local wildlife. This children's museum provides a vibrant, interactive, learning environment that invites children from ages two to twelve years to pretend, explore, and engage the mind, heart, and senses in joyful learning, with exhibits including the World of Sound, Creative Corner, Solar Energy, Toddler Corner, and Japanese Culture.
Georgina Cole Library is associated with the Carlsbad City Library. Established in the year 1967, it underwent some remodeling and was reopened in 2000. Several of its programs are supported by Carlsbad Library and Arts Foundation and Friends of the Carlsbad Library.
