Edmonton Radial Railway Society's Street Car Museum is one of the most delightful places to visit Edmonton. It's astonishing to note the evolution of cars over the ages and this museum, that has restored age-old street cars, provides glimpses of that evolution. It is possible to book the cars for after-hours private charters, which are ideal for corporate entertainment. The car barn, where you can see other street cars in the process of being restored. »Calgary & Edmonton (1891) Railway Museum

During July and August you can travel back in time to see what Old Strathcona's railway station was really like. The museum is home to a working telegraph service, which was the main method of communication in the early days. This is a free attraction and frequent guided tours are available. However, donations are gratefully accepted. It can also be visited by appointment in the winter.

»Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village

Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is a wonderful tourist attraction. This fun little open-air museum uses historical interpreters who tell the story of the Bloc settlement that existed in Edmonton from 1892 to 1930. Characters dressed in period costume re-enact daily life as it was in that time period. Guided tours are available and visitors can even ride on horse-drawn grain wagons. Bring a lunch and relax in the picnic area afterward. Feasts, music festivals, special days, and garden tours are featured throughout the year. Call for more information.

The Gallery A, as technical and functional as it sounds, sits on the main floor of the stupendous TELUS Centre building. The modern-looking edifice of the building is not an allusion to the kind of exhibitions displayed in this gallery. Vascular Plant Herbarium is one of the largest of its kind in Alberta and the third largest in Canada. It is located in the Biological Sciences Building of the University of Alberta. This interesting vascular plant collection dates from 1912 and comprises over 250,000 specimens. The collection is split into three categories, including teaching, reference, and the main collection. It is a fascinating place to visit. Specimens from the herbarium are frequently requested on loan from institutions around the world. Admission is free.

»Cryptogamic Herbarium

The Cryptogamic Herbarium is a part of the Biological Sciences Department of the University of Alberta. Cryptogamic plants are the mosses, fungi, liverworts and lichens that we see around us everyday, but often fail to notice. About 200,000 different specimens of this fascinating plant life are on display here. Research into this group of plants, which are particularly sensitive to environmental changes, has taken on a new importance in an age of rapid ecological damage. Apart from viewing the plants, specimens are available for loan to researchers.

At the University of Alberta's Department of Human Ecology, not only will you find a fascinating collection of European costumes dating from 1760 to 1980, but also a selection of exhibits from Africa and the Far East.
