»Terra Amata

Known to be one of the oldest known examples of a site with prepared living structure, Terra Amata is surely an archaeological wonder. It is an ancient Lower Paleolithic site located on the Mediterranean coast of southern France near the modern town of Nice. The site was excavated by Henry de Lumley in the mid 1960s and is located on a series of fossil beaches. The site was found to have eleven main levels of occupation suggesting period re-visitation of the spot over many years. The imprints of small wooden posts suggest that temporary huts had been erected with stones pinning the base of the walls to the ground. It dates back to almost 3,80,000 years ago and also contains several occupation floors including evidence of small oval huts with central hearths.
