Nestled in the historical center of Natal, Capitania das Artes is the cultural epicenter of the city. Built in the late 19th Century, this neoclassical structure was established on the site of the former city hall. This building was used as the headquarters by the port authority of Natal. The building was then abandoned, fell into disrepair and consecutively threatened with demolition. In 1988, architect João Maurício de Miranda renovated the entire building, only retaining its beautiful exterior, and it become pivotal as the city's cultural center. Origninally called the Teatro Carlos Gomes, this Art Nouveau heritage monument was built between 1898-1904 and has been entertaining theater lovers ever since. It was renamed Teatro Alberto Maranhão in 1957 and has an old worldly charm to it though now it features modern amenities such as central air conditioning, a cafe and lighting.
