This is undoubtedly one of the largest Natural History museums in France (350,000 artefacts and specimens, yet only one tenth are on public display). Established 200 years ago, the galleries are organized by theme (ethnography, fish, prehistory, vivarium, etc.) Don't miss the impressive 20-metre-long whale skeleton! Lectures are regularly given on botany, ornithology, entomology, Earth sciences and many other subjects. The museum also has a bookshop and a tea room.
Set in grounds through which the River Cens runs, this par 72, 18-hole golf course's vast fairways and carefully maintained greens offer golfers the perfect combination of tradition and originality. A competitive yet friendly club, its clubhouse is renowned for its receptions. The club organizes lessons for both beginners and experienced players and hosts many tournaments. Different membership rates are available for varying periods. Directions: Take the N165 to Vannes, exit Vigneux-de-Bretagne
A visit to this zoo (situated around 30km south-east of the city) is always an instructive, fun day out for the whole family. More than 450 animals are given relative freedom to roam over nine hectares of land. Several activities make this farm different from a traditional zoo (especially the bear and orang-utan training sessions, in which the public are invited to take part) and on Sunday afternoons you can help out at feeding time. What's more, a specially designed area gives visitors the chance to get close to a variety of monkeys and lemurs in the wild. Directions: Take the N249 to Cholet, exit D763 and head for Ancenis/La Boissière-du-Doré Admission: adults 60F (EUR 9.21) 3-12yrs 35F (EUR 5.37)
