Gros-plant and Muscadet - the two fruity white wines produced by the vineyards in this part of the Loire region nearest the west coast - are the region's pride and joy. Although it was the Romans who planted the first vine stock, today's Gros-plant comes from the Folle Blanche type of vine first introduced by Dutch merchants at the end of the Middle Ages, whilst Melon or Muscadet appeared during the 17th century. Situated just 20 minutes south-east of the city, the Pallet museum delves into the vineyards' history and explains the various stages involved in wine producing, from the choice of vine or grape picking to the art of cooperage. A variety of objects are on display, including old wine presses that still seem to give off pleasantly intoxicating aromas… Wine tastings are held from May until September.
