    »Santa Anita Golf Course

This popular course sees quite a bit of backup for tee times, but its natural beauty and varied holes are well worth the wait. The long fairways are lined with oak trees and the San Gabriel Mountains are visible. Those attractive trees can cause trouble when it comes to drives, as well as the numerous sand bunkers when approaching the greens. Unlike many of the Southern California courses with views of the mountains, this one is far enough away from the hills to provide a smooth walking game.

    »Arcadia Golf Course

Located in the scenic city of Arcadia just a few miles away from Los Angeles, the Arcadia Golf Course is 1,947 yards of sheer golfing pleasure. The Golf Learning Center is also located here, where golf aficionados can get some practical training in the game. Taking a few tips from the on-site pro Richard Carlson is a good idea before starting on a game. The club house, pro shop and snack bar offer ample alternatives to relax after a challenging game. Call ahead for more details.

    »Santa Anita Park

Come feel a unique thrill as you watch a thoroughbred horse race from a large beautiful park area located right in the middle of the track. Families love to bring picnic baskets and eat in this center area. A playground is in the center for little ones who are more intent on rolling and tumbling than watching the horses race past them. Set against the beautiful San Gabriel Mountains, the handsome Art Deco grandstand seats 5,000 hopeful spectators. For up-coming races and other information, check the website.

    »Mount Zion

This lovely verdant hike is tucked away in the middle of the majestic Angeles Forest, a sprawling gem flanking LA on the southeast side. You will need to purchase a day or annual pass for your visit. Park at the Chantry Flats parking lot and cross the road to the trailhead. Rated at 2200-foot elevation gain and running 10 miles round-trip, this hike is a cut above the average moderate category. Along the way, you will come across a beautiful year-round waterfall. After a steep scramble, you will embark on a well-graded trek weaving along a rocky stream before it ramps up more steeply toward the top of Mount Zion. Enjoy fine views opening from the mountaintop. Considering bringing a light picnic to enjoy at one of the campsites along the way. - Jamie Zum

    »The Eaton Canyon Golf Course

These hilly nine holes are set up against the San Gabriel Mountains, providing a rigorous walking game of golf. Among the hazards here, are some dramatically sloped greens and sizable trees. The real challenge, however, is the often windy conditions caused by the proximity to the mountains. The weather can become a serious factor for your game here, particularly on drives, as many of the fairways are curved. Call ahead or browse through the website for more details.

    »San Gabriel Country Club

This private course is more than 80 years old, and was recently re-designed with more than a dozen agonizing sand bunkers. In addition to countless pits of sand, the fairways are defined by attractive tree lines. These two elements combine to challenge both your short and long games along a well-kept and attractive course. Although this is a country club, they allow reciprocal play.

    »Henninger Flats

Part of the magnificent Angeles Forest, this hike does not require a park pass as it is directly adjacent to a quiet and picturesque residential neighborhood in Pasadena. Park anywhere on the street and locate the trail head at 1750 Altadena Drive. A 3-mile trek will take you up a winding trail along a sandy hillside to a cluster of idyllic campgrounds. The moderate-to-robust level incline suits a wide range of hikers, from beginner to advanced. Beware of hot sunny days, as the hike offers little in the way of shade. Bring plenty of water and wear a hat. The campgrounds are popular with many Angelenos, providing a fine balance of accessibility and remoteness. Running water and restrooms are available and maintained year round. The topmost of the three campgrounds lends to a particularly secluded spot with a stunning view. - Jamie Zum

    »Whittier Narrows Golf Course

This course is characterized by generous greens, wide fairways and plenty of trees. There are not a whole lot of other hazards but for some sand here and there, yet the course has its followers because of well-designed and maintained landscaping. Additional features here include a pro shop, equipment rentals, golf lessons, a night-lighted driving range, putting greens, a chipping green, cart rentals, a coffee shop and a cocktail lounge.

    »Alhambra Golf Course

This diverse course begins with a deceptively straight-foward front nine, but then pulls out all the stops on the very hilly back nine. Added during the 1970s, the better-designed latter half of the course requires an accurate short game to avoid the sand bunkers guarding the greens. The course also features some challenging water traps. Additional features of the course include an impressive three-story driving range for those who like a real challenge.

    »Altadena Golf Course

This regulation course has nine holes, measuring just over 2,995 yards in length. Trees affect shots on two holes, and one sand bunker offers a bit of a challenge. Though the regulars are mostly older players, some of the local students come and play here as well. The most crowded times tend to be on the weekends and near midday during the week. The course offers a chipping area, a putting green, a practice sand bunker and a driving range.

    »Dwight Eisenhower Golf Course

This difficult course is part of the Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms. It has treacherously narrow fairways and a constantly foreboding rough. This is a very hilly course providing some outstanding views, as a number of holes commence from elevated tees. This course and the nearby Didrikson Zaharias course combine to make one of the best golf resorts in the Los Angeles area and can subsequently be quite busy.
