La Cage Aux Folles
Emerson Umbrella Center for the ArtsApril 26, 2015 3:00 PM

Boston, MA 1742
A boisterous and uplifting portrait of love in a nontraditional family, the Tony Award-winning "La Cage aux Folles" has been one of Broadway's biggest hits for more than 30 years -- and now you can catch it at the Emerson Umbrella Center for the Arts. Georges and Albin, a gay couple who run and star in a popular drag show, find their domestic peace shattered when Georges' son (fathered during a one-night fling) announces his impending marriage to the daughter of a right-wing politician who wants to shut down the drag show. The lively and glittering spectacle that ensues celebrates family values, unconditional love and, above all, the need to be proud of who we are. The musical -- which was adapted into the popular movie "The Birdcage" starring Robin Williams -- features gorgeous costumes, fabulous dance numbers and a wonderful Jerry Herman score.

Neville's Island

Somewhere between the off-the-wall comedy of "The Office" and the brutal barbarity of "Lord of the Flies" lies "Neville's Island". Nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Comedy, this play follows a small group of men whose work trip finds them shipwrecked on a tiny island. What starts off as a team-building exercise in England's Lake District for four middle-aged businessmen quickly turns into a harrowing -- and hilarious -- fight for survival in this wickedly funny play at the Stoneham Theatre.

A Symphonic Spectacular

One of Boston's true cultural jewels, the Civic finishes its 90th season with a flourish, featuring favorite works from Ravel, Rimsky-Korsakov and Enescu. Enescu's famed Romanian Rhapsody No. 1 opens the concert, under the baton of esteemed music director and conductor Max Hobart, followed by the orchestral version of the ballet "Daphnis et Chloe", by French impressionist Maurice Ravel. For the dramatic finale, the orchestra performs Rimsky-Korsakov's gorgeous symphonic poem, "Scheherazade", based on the famed folk tales of "The Arabian Nights". The piece has long been a favorite of figure skaters, and in fact, American ice dancers Charlie White and Meryl Davis performed the song for their free dance, as part of their gold-medal win at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
