Created in 1907 to help with the county's water supply, Lake Paradise is truly a paradise. You can take a boat out on to the tranquil waters of the reservoir, but there is no swimming allowed.
Lawson Park is popular for a reason, this large park is home to a lot of activites. With four tennis courts, a batting cage, pickle ball, and a filed that can be used for football of soccer, it's no wonder that this park is the perfect spot for some fun in the sun. There is also a large playground that's perfect for kids.
This charming 24 acre park is the perfect outing for a family day. Lytle Park has a number of fun activities. This beautiful park has many unique attractions, including an old oil well and art sculptures. Play tennis on their 6 courts, take a stroll through their gardens, play in the playgrounds, have a picnic, and check out the huge swimming pool. Lytle Pool is one of the largest pools in the state and for a moderate fee you can take a dip.
The largest park in the city, Peterson Park is the perfect spot to spend a sunny afternoon. Watch a American Legion Jr. game on the baseball diamond, play a game of horseshoes, have your children play on the playground, or just relax with a picnic. This green park is also the site to great events, including music concerts.
Lake Mattoon was created in the 1950s to be a water reserve and it's since become the perfect spot for recreational activities. Take a boat out and waterski along the shore. Try your luck fishing for bass and catfish. Enjoy a picnic at Lake Mattoon Public Beach. At 1,050-acres, there's a lot of room to enjoy the water.
Opened in 1956, Coles County Speedway is one of the oldest dirt tracks in the Mid-West. The 1/8th mile oval is the site of weekly races. Visit to see Micro Sprint cars zoom by or sign up yourself and race against fellow drivers in go-cart. This challenging track is fun for both spectators and drivers.

Starting in Charleston and ending in Mattoon at 10th Street, this charming 12 mile trail is perfect for running, walking, biking, and horseback riding. The path mostly runs along an old railroad with scenic views of farmlands, ponds, woods, and creeks. There is 2 miles of paved road and 10 miles of unpaved pathway, but this trail is easy enough that even beginners can enjoy it.

This city aquatic center offers fun for all ages. It features a frog slide, water slide, one-meter drop slide, wet playground area, sand playground area, concessions/food court area, shaded picnic area, bath house, several lap lanes and a diving board. The Aquatic Center opens for the season on Memorial Day weekend.
