Other cities in the South of France, such as Avignon and Cannes, are also within easy reach by train. Inaugurated in 1848, the station is really worth seeing. Notably its 104-stepped stairway, designed by architects Serres and Arnal and inaugurated in 1928, is of both historical and architectural importance and has become part of the city's heritage. Indeed, it is adorned with statues which depict the glories of France's African and Asian colonies, evoking Marseilles' commercial past. Scenes from Jacques Deray's film Borsalino (1970) were filmed on its steps.
