»Elling Swings Sinatra

April 26, 2015 7:00 PM

Kurt Elling is a jazz vocalist from Chicago, Illinois who is perhaps best known for his abilities and contributions to the style of singing known as vocalese, which is similar to scat singing, where the voice is used as a solo instrument typically accompanied by a band or orchestra; however, vocalese consists of actual lyrics instead of the nonsensical syllables employed in scat singing. Beginning his career in music in 1995, Elling has quickly risen to become one of jazz's most talented and celebrated vocalists--earning his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 2010 for his album Dedicated to You: Kurt Elling Sings the Music of Coltrane and Hartman.

»WWE - World Wrestling Entertainment

April 27, 2015 6:30 PM

During the early 20th century wresting was looked at as a serious sport with classical connections to Olympic competitions. This all changed, though, with the rise of World Wrestling Entertainment during the 80s. Rising to prominence under the guidance of CEO Vince McMahon, WWE presented wrestling as less of a sport and more of a staged entertainment event with colorful characters and elaborately planned title matches. Battles between WWE wrestlers are typically held in stadiums, packed with fervent fans, and are televised to audiences around the country. Theatrics and even pyrotechnics are employed to an ostentatious degree but all the lively visuals combine to make for some extremely engaging, exaggerated wrestling performances that fans continue to thrive on.

»Peelander-z @ Lyric Room

May 03, 2015 8:00 PM

Peelander-Z is a New York-based punk band that originally formed in Japan in 1998. Billing themselves as a "Japanese Action Comic band hailing from the Z area of Planet Peelander," the band's four members (known as Peelander Yellow, Peelander Green, Peelander Red and Peelander Pink) don oddball, psychedelic outfits that include headdresses, plastic wigs and Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers-style jumpsuits. Musically, Peelander-Z plays a quick, brash style that pulls equally from 1980s hardcore and 1990s skate punk. The band's outrageous stage show has won it appearances on several television shows, and slots at notable festivals such as Warped Tour and Bonnaroo.

»Bill Engvall

May 15, 2015 8:00 PM

Bill Engvall is a Texas-born comedian who was made famous for his "here's your sign" bit, a sarcastic ode to stupidity that boosted his career in the 1990s after years of struggling to find a mainstream audience. Engvall's comedic sensibilities often stem from tales of the American South, including riffs on hunting, fishing and drinking beer. His success has led to the creation of The Bill Engvall Show on TBS, and his inclusion in the highly popular Blue Collar Comedy Tour.

»Say Goodnight Gracie

May 16, 2015 7:30 PM

Say Goodnight Gracie is a classic Broadway production that traces the life of comedian George Burns from his childhood in Manhattan throughout his relationship with his wife Gracie Allen. The one-man show was written by Rupert Holmes and originally directed by John Tillinger during the show's 2002 Broadway run at the Helen Hayes Theatre. Say Goodnight Gracie ran for 364 performances, making it Broadway's third longest running one-man show starring Frank Gorshin as Burns and featuring Didi Conn's pre-recorded voice as Allen. The play, chronicling Burns' lustrous career and his provocative first encounter and relationship with Allen, tells an intimate, tender and hilarious true-life love story that earned Holmes a Tony Away nomination for Best Play in 2003.
