Devil’s Lake State Park at Baraboo is the perfect place to spend a family weekend or to just get onto a hiking trail with a gang of friends. The park has certain rules and regulations, even some apply to your pets too. The 9,740 acre (3,940 hectare) Lake Mendota is the largest of Madison's four lakes. The University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as a school of limnology are located on the lake. The lake is very popular for aquatic recreation during the summer, particularly boating, fishing and water sports.

The lake was originally named by the Winnebago people "Teepee Lake," although Monona is thought to be a Chippewa word meaning "beautiful."
