    »Parachute

    September 18, 2014 8:00 PM

Formerly called Sparky's Flaw, the Charlottesville, Virginia five-piece Parachute has managed to land itself amongst the teeny-bopper bands that every little girl dreams of hanging out with. After the band members graduated from college, they focused solely on promoting their debut full length, which landed them a contract with Nivea Skincare, which used two of the band's songs on national commercials. As part of this contract, the band shared the stage with the Jonas Brothers and Taylor Swift on the Nivea Times Square Stage for the 2008 New Year's Eve countdown. The result was tremendous fame, national tours with bands like Switchfoot and a girlfriend for the Parachute drummer (who snagged Taylor Swift after the performance).

    »Tennis

    September 18, 2014 9:00 PM

When listening to music created by the Denver, CO based band Tennis, images are conjured of sail boats, sun burns, white sand beaches and hammocks. The husband and wife's tunes have such a beach friendly sound that it's hard to think the group comes from such a landlocked city like Denver. The duo did spend eight months sailing around the Eastern Seaboard, though, so all of the inadvertent ocean references found in the group's music isn't unfounded. Tennis caught the attention of several critics in 2010 after it released a few singles as well as an EP and as the band's notoriety continues to grow, it will undoubtedly prove to be an interesting electronically infused surf rock act to track.

    »Social Distortion

    September 18, 2014 8:00 PM

Social Distortion is punk rock band from Southern California that was on the forefront of the hardcore punk explosion of the 1980s. The band recorded its debut album Mommy's Little Monster, and released it in 1983, just before the 1994 premiere of the documentary Another State of Mind, the seminal punk rockumentary that featured the band on its 1982 tour. Both releases thrust the band onto the national punk scene, though front man Mike Ness's drug problems forced Social Distortion to disband in 1985. The breakup was only the first of many times Social Distortion would dissolve, though the band has always reformed with different lineups and that managed to produce quality music with Ness always at the helm. By contemporary punk standards, the music of Social Distortion might best be described as punk-inspired alternative rock with a little old fashioned rock'n'roll tossed in the mix, but the band will always be remembered as a pioneer of the Los Angeles hardcore punk scene.

    »Shabazz Palaces

    September 19, 2014 8:00 PM

Shabazz Palaces is an abstract hip-hop project based out of Seattle, Washington. Comprised of percussionist Tendai Maraire, engineer Erik Blood and former Digable Planets emcee, Ishmael Butler, the group breaks free of many of hip-hop's typical molds, creating a moody, psychedelic style that should appeal to fans of alternative versions of the genre. The group's odd tendencies are compounded by eccentric live shows that includes trippy costumes and masks. Blood's production sounds both modern and vintage, pulling not only from trending genres such as dubstep, but also from classic laid-back jazz and soul. Digable Planets' fans should be plenty familiar with Butler's smooth flow already, but new listeners will find that his on-point delivery keeps the more glum, icy aspects of Shabazz Palaces' music firmly grounded in accessible territory.
