Vilagarcía de Arousa
Vilagarcía is 50km from Santiago de Compostela on the coast and can be reached by train (leaving every hour from Santiago). The population is 35000 and as its name indicates, it is located on the southern shore of the Arousa estuary. The locals call it "the pearl of Arousa" because of its beautiful surroundings and the gentle climate. The city was founded by a 15th century knight, and you can still see the completely renovated nobleman's palace. Vilagarcía is an ideal place for a long walk along rúa de Mariña, dotted with 19th century houses, or to enjoy Compostela beach, a popular holiday location for the well-to-do of Santiago de Compostela at the turn of the century who came to visit the baths.
