»Lincoln Children's Zoo

Located close to downtown Lincoln and adjacent to Antelope Park, this combination zoo and botanical garden is a fun and inexpensive way to spend a day with the kids. Don't expect the typical run down petting zoo, though: the collection of more than 300 animals contains a wide range of exotic beasts, including alligators, leopards, sloths and flamingos, just to name a few species. In addition to the animal exhibits, more than 400 species of plants are attractively displayed throughout the zoo. Kids can also ride on the zoo's miniature railroad, visit the gift shop or dine at Valentino's Safari Cafe. Check website for varying dates.

Make sure the car windows sparkle before embarking on this drive-through adventure. A road leads visitors through several different lands featuring Sandhill Cranes, antelope, deer and a large buffalo herd. Although on display, most of the animals freely roam this corner of the county. A special section called Wolf Woods does require a short walk. While out of the car, be sure to check out the interactive nature exhibits and gift shop. All facilities are accessible to the physically challenged.

»Quarry Oaks Golf Course

Of the area's most challenging golf courses, this one offers the best views while playing it. Designer John LaFoy took advantage of the natural peaks, dips and lush setting of Nebraska's Platte River Valley. The championship course is diverse, featuring a half-island green on the 17th hole. You do not have to be the best of the best to play here. All skill levels are welcome. Players will appreciate the state-of-the-art practice range.
