Located at a mere 15.3 kilometers (9.5 miles) from Chidambaram, Pichavaram is a major site of eco-tourism and home to the second largest Mangrove forests in the world. Spread over an area of 2800 acres (1133.12 hectares), the forests can be navigated by a boat through the endless water channels that connect the entire forest and islands. Apart from the large expanse, the Pichavaram forests are also considered to be some of the healthiest mangroves and are instrumental in supporting a wide variety of water-based life forms in the region. A wide variety of exotic and migratory birds can also be found nesting in the forest. A sterling initiative by the The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) has made this a known tourist attraction while ensuring the protection of this sensitive eco-system. The department has facility for boating and offers a number of tours through the forest. You can rent out a humble row boat for a leisurely two-hour tour of the forest or a motorboat which takes 40 minutes if you're in a hurry. Apart from this, there is also a four hour group tour that spans the entire length of the forest and includes a stopover at a nearby beach.
