A charming hamlet in Sirdal municipality, Bjørnestad is renowned for Bjørnestad Skisenter, a popular ski resort. Though built on a smaller scale, this skiing resort offers spectacular terrain for seasoned skiers. It is also Sirdal's steepest resort. A single T-Bar lift remains operational at the resort and ferries skiers 800 meters (2624 feet) high up the ice-clad mountains.
A popular tourist destination, Sirdal also has a long political history. In the year 1849, it was seceded from Bakke. On January 1 1905, Sirdal was sectioned into Ovre Sirdal and Tonstad. On January 1, 1960, they merged again to form the Sirdal municipality. Tourism is a major industry in Sirdal. Its scenic mountanous plateaus, extensive mountains, pristine lakes and mesmerizing views attract travelers from around the world.
