»The 66th Annual Shrine Circus

April 02, 2015 7:00 PM

Though several circus companies have decided to modernize and update their shows with high-tech flourishes and cutting edge special effects, the Shrine Circus has chosen to stay true to its roots with a show fashioned in the same vein as its performances from the early 20th Century. Featuring all the classic circus fare from wacky clowns to daredevil tightrope walkers, the company hosts productions suited for all ages. Typically performed within the confines of a single ring, opposed to a more extravagant three-ring circus, the Shrine Circus gives attendees an opportunity to appreciate and take in every moment of circus excitement.

Formed in 2007 when members Joe Newman, Gus Unger-Hamilton and Thom Green were still students at Leeds University, the band cultivated an amalgam of snappy guitars, understated sampling and tight harmonies for its debut album, An Awesome Wave, which was released in 2012.

April 02, 2015 7:30 PM

Adapted from the 18th-Century French fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast is musical production that made its Broadway debut in 1994. The show follows the story of a girl named Belle, who turns to reading books as an escape from her monotonous life in a provincial town in France. When her madcap father sets off into the woods to show one of his crazy inventions at a fair, he becomes lost and stumbles upon an enchanted castle and the Beast who presides over it. The Beast takes Maurice as his prisoner, and Belle's adventure begins when she agrees to trade places with her father so that he can be free. Lonely and trapped, she befriends the magical objects that inhabit the castle and slowly uncovers the kind heart buried deep within the surly Beast.

»Kopecky, Essential Machine

April 02, 2015 8:00 PM

The Kopecky Family Band may not be related by blood but there's definitely a family vibe to their easygoing style of twee, country-tinged indie rock. The band trades off call and response boy-girl vocals over a bed of guitars, drums, bass, cello and violin. From their beginnings inside a practice room at Belmont University, the Kopecky Family Band has been making unpretentious, feel-good music since 2007.

»Megan Slankard

April 03, 2015

Megan Slankard released her first album when she was only 18 and it garnered her a fair amount of media attention and accolades, but paled in comparison to when her second album was featured on an episode of TLC's What Not To Wear. Instantly, Freaky Little Story (2003) became a hit and viewers of the show made the record reach the top five of the sales charts. Slankard's sound grows bigger and more polished with each record she releases, partially due to a partnership with David Bryson--her producer and guitarist for the group Counting Crows.
