In 1204 Montpellier passed into the hands of the Kings of Aragon. Jacques d'Aragon built the fortified city walls around the city that was shaped like a crest (or écusson
). Today the city center is still called the Écusson. In reality the kings of Aragon lived on the site where the Palais de Justice currently stands. The story goes that it was there that Jacques I killed his page because he stained his clothes. Come and admire the Gothic doorway and the 17th-century spiral staircase. It's also a refreshing district in which to escape the summer heat.
