Bars & Cafes
Named after James Joyce's classic novel, Finnegans Wake, this fashionable pub is a favorite among the 30-something inhabitants of São Paulo. Besides the typical Irish setting, with wooden tables and serving counter, and celebration extravaganzas like the green beer on Saint Patrick's Day, there are many typical Gaelic touches such as the famed Irish Coffee, and typical dishes and drinks from the Emerald Isle. For those with an appetite, the Finnismonster sandwich should do the trick: two hamburgers, lettuce, tomatoes and mayonnaise on wholemeal bread, served with French fries. The pub remains open from 6p Monday through Friday and on Saturdays, it opens at 7p.
Bar Léo serves the best draft beer in the whole country according to its faithful customers, who have been coming here from far and wide since the 1940s. Besides its celebrated draft beer, the bar's famous canapes and sausages help complete the offering. The collection of beer cans on display add a unique touch to the decoration. But beware: mixing beer with other drinks or asking for the draft to be poured without its usual frothy head is unforgivable in this particular establishment.
The traffic jam on J.K. Avenue is the unmistakable give-away: the Charles Edward is packed again which happens just about every evening. It looks like the perfect English pub with antique furniture and a London-like atmosphere. The shows that are presented live on stage provide the perfect soundtrack to the dance floor where the mostly over-30 crowd groove to the sounds of pop music, reggae and blues. The Whisky Club boasts more than 1000 members and 50 different brands of Scotch.
