    This historic landmark is such an important part of the community because of the pioneering courage its famous inhabitants embodied. Most notable among them are statesman and painter, George Caleb Bingham, and later the Waggoners, a well-established flour milling family. Its 19th century architectural details, furniture and paintings are worth a look. Now offering tours at reasonable prices: adults $5, senior citizens $4.50, and children and students $2. Also available for rent and is often used for weddings, large conferences and family reunions.

    »Cave Spring

    This 35-acre historic site and nature preserve sits on land that once was part of the Santa Fe Trail. Today, it is dedicated to the preservation of local history and natural surroundings. A variety of interactive programs is available, including one that focuses on Lepidoptera (Butterflies), Ornithology basics, O' Pioneers and more. For those that love to hike, bird watch, picnic or just get lost, Cave Springs is truly a getaway from it all. As its name suggests, there is a small cavern and a riparian pond within the park.

    »Swope Memorial Golf Course

    This course is located within the larger confines of Swope Park and is one of the best public courses in the Midwest. It was designed in 1934 with 18 holes by the famed golf architect A.W. Tillinghast as a place to relax within the larger metro area. In fact, you can see the K.C. skyline from some of the tees and enjoy the tranquility. The prices are some of the best in Jackson County, but if you decide not to stick around and put, then you can visit the Kansas City Zoo, Starlight Theater or the Blue River Parkway Trails, all of them are extremely nearby.

    This man-made lake in sprawling Fleming Park is one of the best weekend getaways for people from all around Jackson County. Recreational activities on this 970-acre lake include excursions by speedboat, sailing, picnics, fishing and visitors can also hike upon the trails that encircle the lake. Stop at the convenience store within the marina to stock up on supplies like gas, food, etc., you can even pick up your bait and rent a canoe here also.

    The Kemper Outdoor Education Center provides hands-on, interactive education for kids as well as adults through its fossil exhibits, trails, ponds and arboretum. The center is usually filled with elementary school students exploring the different topographical features of the prairie, some others are here for day camp and others are here for team exercises. The on-site instructors teach about natural history including workshops on lepidoptery, herpetology, entomology and the myriad events the center provides is an invaluable resource to the community.

    This park does it all - from hosting music concerts to AIDS walks. Better known for its sports events, the park is visited by sports fanatics frequently.
